The official start of the 2019 high school football season is 3 months away, but one of the biggest and best summer tuneups for the new season unfolds Friday in Lubbock and five Hub City programs are in the thick of things.
Coronado is the host of the McGavock 7-on-7 Tournament on Friday, with games throughout the day and into the afternoon at both Coronado and Plains Capital Park-Lowrey Field.
The Mustangs will be joined by Frenship, Lubbock High, Monterey and Estacado in the 16-team field. Coronado, the Tigers and the Westerners are in the same pool as Odessa High, while the Plainsmen are with Abilene, Caprock and San Angelo Central and Estacado will tangle with Lee, Dumas and Abilene High. The fourth pool consists of Permian, Amarillo High, Hereford and Midland Christian.
Following pool play, there will be a pair of semifinals at Plains Capital Park-Lowrey Field at 4 p.m., followed by a championship game at 5 p.m.
