One step down, the next looms considerably more challenging for Coronado.
Fresh off a 4-1 victory against Abilene Cooper in the Class 5A bi-district round, the Lady Mustangs look for their next step at 6 p.m. Monday when they tangle with El Paso Eastwood at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.
Coronado (22-3-1) turned in a solid playoff-opening performance against Abilene Cooper, with goals from Heaven Rossette, Nicki Covington, Makayla Herrell and Piper Granato.
Herrell, Filly Urias, Lexi De La Cruz and Malia Montes supplied assists to the balanced offensive attack, and goalkeeper Charlotte Poehl recorded 7 saves.
Now the focus shifts to Eastwood (21-2-2), which eased past El Paso Canutillo 3-2 in the first found. The Troopers turned in a huge turnaround season, going 16-2 in District 2-5A to place second behind El Paso El Dorado.
The Lady Mustangs are looking to reach the third round for the second year in a row. They advanced to the state quarterfinals last spring after beating Randall, El Paso Eastlake and Amarillo High before falling to Grapevine.
Eastwood has lost in the first round to Frenship the last two years.
