WICHITA FALLS -- Coronado made it clear early on it wanted another shot in a Class 5A regional quarterfinal when it met Wichita Falls Rider on Friday.
Lady Mustang senior captain Heaven Rossette — assisted by teammate junior Lexi De La Cruz — knocked in Coronado’s first goal within the game’s opening 2 minutes to send Coronado on its way to a 2-1 victory.
“We knew we needed to get one in early,” said Lady Mustang coach Alistair Caldwell, whose team improved to 24-3-1. “We talked about it all season since probably district started. We wanted to get up in the first 10 minutes and it seems to have happened in our last few games.”
Rossette and De La Cruz joined together later in the first half for another goal.
Rider (17-6-3) attempted to knot the game up with a goal in the second period, but the Lady Mustangs fended off the comeback.
Coronado had a breakout season last year, pushing though to the fourth round, and have built off that run to return to the regional semifinals.
“It is just confidence and a mentality factor.,” Caldwell said. “Going into this year after our success last year, we are just saying to ourselves ‘Why not us? Why not Coronado?’”
The Lady Mustangs next challenge will be Burleson Centennial (22-2-2) in the regional semifinals at 3 p.m. next Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
