MIDLAND -- Estacado is deep with veteran talent, but every once in a while the younger Matadors don’t hesitate to make their mark.

That happened at the right time Monday to help Estacado churn out a gritty 55-42 road victory against a tough Greenwood team.

Sophomores Kreeland Avery and Kiante Williams combined for 18 of the Mats’ 34 points to help them overcome a 22-21 halftime deficit.

Avery scored 5 in each of the final two quarters, hitting one of his three 3-pointers in each stanza. Williams notched 5 in the third quarter when Estacado (19-6) gained the upper hand by outscoring the Rangers (18-7) 17-10 then added a trey in the final period.

Avery paced a balanced attack with 13 points, while Williams scored 12. Keke Murray notched 11 and Alijah Willard scored 10.

Estacado takes a break on Friday before hitting the District 3-4A season with a road game at Lamesa on Jan. 21.
