ABILENE -- Monterey stormed back from an up-and-down opening day at the Bev Ball Tournament to log three victories and take the Silver Bracket championship on Saturday.

The Lady Plainsmen rolled past Wichita Falls High (25-12, 25-18), Holliday (25-13, 25-23) and Boerne Champion (25-21, 25-22) to finish the tournament with a 5-2 record.

Monterey (6-3) got strong days from its normal core group, with Taylor Salsky notching 61 assists, 21 kills and 16 digs, Nadia Morales had 21 kills and 14 dogs and Meagan Jimenez had 31 digs. Maddi Stephens also came up big with 21 kills, 12 digs and 4 aces.

After a busy opening week, the Lady Plainsmen travel to Levelland for a 6 p.m. contest on Tuesday.

Lady Mustangs claims consolation crown in gold bracket

ABILENE -- After dropping its first match, Coronado grinded through two wins to claim the Gold Bracket consolation championship at the Bev Ball Tournament.

The Lady Mustangs (5-4) fell to Burleson (25-17, 25-16) then outlasted Midlothian (25-22, 30-29) and Abilene Cooper (23-25, 25-18, 25-17) to end the tournament with a 5-3 record.

Against Midlothian, Carson Edwards led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs. Thalia Sanchez added 22 digs, whole Kirby Stanek chipped in with 21 assists and 5 digs.

In the come-from-behind triumph vs. Abilene Cooper, Aaliyah Gray set the pace with 17 kills, 15 digs and 5 aces. Stanek registered 31 assists and 6 digs, while Sanchez was a big factor with 24 digs. Edwards added 15 kills and 12 dogs. Gray was named to the all-tournament team.

Coronado travels to San Angelo Central for a 5:30 p.m. match on Tuesday.

Lady Pirates surge to 3-0 mark on final day at Denton Ryan tournament

DENTON -- Brought to earth on Friday, Lubbock-Cooper roared back on the last day of the Denton Ryan Kick-Off Classic with three wins to the Gold Bracket Consolation championship.

The Lady Pirates topped Red Oak (28-26, 25-23), Springtown (25-18, 25-19) and closed out with a tough-as-nails win against Aubrey that was their toughest matchup of the tournament (25-22, 22-25, 15-9).

Contributions came from several sources on the final day of the tournament. Avrie Douglas notched 15 kills and 4 blocks, Tatum Farmer had 15 kills, Jenna Patterson logged 13 kills and 11 digs, Shelby Snead chimed in with 15 digs and 36 assists and Kate Siegel led Cooper (7-3) with 33 digs. The Lady Pirates also got solid work off the bench from Keke Underwood and Anndee Greenlee with 13 assists each.

Cooper is back home Tuesday when it entertains Seminole at 6 p.m.

At the same tournament, Lubbock High started the day with a win against Killeen Shoemaker before dropping matches to Denison and Denton Ryan.

The Lady Westerners rolled past Shoemaker (25-16, 25-12), led by Kennedy Scheppler with 4 kills, 4 aces, and 3½ blocks and Camille Webb with 12 assists, 4 digs and 3 aces. LHS (5-6) pushed Denison before falling (25-20, 25-22) and forced Denton Ryan to grind as well (26-24, 25-17).

Lubbock High plays host to Frenship at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Lady Eagles, Lady Lions wrap up play at Spike Down Tournament

FORT WORTH -- Lubbock Christian didn’t let a slow start spoil the final day of the Spike Down Classic and rallied for a pair of wins to claim the consolation title of the Silver Bracket.

The Lady Eagles knocked off Awty International School (25-20, 25-21) and Fort Worth All Saints (25-19, 25-21) after falling to Cypress Christian School in a spirited battle (25-16, 24-26, 15-13).

In the three matches, Lubbock Christian recorded 21 aces, 79 kills and 205 digs.

Playing in the top bracket, Trinity Christian clipped Midland Christian (25-20, 19-25, 15-13) to open the day to claim a spot in the semifinals. The Lady Lions fell to Parish Episcopal (21-25, 25-19, 15-4) then lost in the third-place match to The Woodlands John Cooper (25-21, 25-18).

Payton Dove was a force for Trinity with 44 digs, 10 kills, 5 assists and 4 blocks. Kalli Johnston logged 52 Assists and had 14 digs. Maddie Grace Ritchie notched 23 kills and 4 digs and Kenzee Burleson made an impact with 53 digs.

Lubbock Christian’s Ashlyn Lott and Payton Dove from Trinity were selected to the all-tournament team.

Estacado unable to stay hot, drops three matches

SHALLOWATER -- Estacado wasn’t able to duplicate its opening-day success at the BSN Shallowater Tournament, dropping three matches on the final day.

The Lady Mats (2-4) dropped matches to Graham (25-18, 25-17), Shallowater (25-18, 25-10) and Brownfield (25-12, 25-20).

C’Kyra Sims had a big day all-around with 15 kills, 11 digs and 9 blocks. Vaniya Davis had 26 assists and Kaylee Rangel added 11 digs.

Estacado plays host to Coahoma at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
