Two of the frontrunners in District 3-5A held steady on Tuesday, but both of them had to work for what they got.

Monterey surged past Lubbock High in the second half to claim a 78-57 victory after the Westerners controlled most of the first half.

Across town, Palo Duro had to stage a similar rally to down pesky Coronado 54-48.

Combined with Amarillo High’s win at Lubbock-Cooper, the Dons hold a one-game lead over the Plainsmen and Pirates with the Sandies op top.

At Westerner Area, Lucas Rodriguez sparked Lubbock High to a fast start with 16 points in the initial 8 minutes and 19 in the first half.

The Westerners (3-16, 0-7 district) led 34-31 at halftime but lost their grip on momentum in the third period.  Seven different Plainsmen scored in a game-changing third quarter and eight jumped in the scorebook in the fourth.
