AMARILLO -- Lubbock-Cooper’s season is still alive. In fact, the Lady Pirates will get a little bonus basketball.

In must-win mode on Monday, Cooper claimed a 52-41 victory at Palo Duro. The outcome, paired with Plainview’s win over Coronado, created a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots from District 3-5A. Now the three teams will play a mini-tournament to determine which two get to the playoffs.

The Lady Pirates (17-17, 9-7 district) and Lady Dons (15-17, 9-7) will square off again at 6 p.m. Thursday at Dimmitt High School.

The winner will take on Plainview (23-10, 9-7) at 6 p.m. Friday in Dimmitt. If PD beats Cooper but loses to Plainview, the Lady Pirates will meet the Lady Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Saturday with those two teams deciding the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds.

As convoluted as all that may seem, the task for LCP on Monday was much simpler: Win.

Avrie Douglas helped make sure the Lady Pirates did that with 16 points. Cooper grabbed an 11-5 lead after one quarter and plodded to the win by outscoring the Lady Dons 35-32 after halftime.

Catalina Cortez added 9 points for the Lady Pirates and hit 5-of-6 free throws -- part of a big night for Cooper at the stripe. Madi Heinrich was 4-of-4, while Douglas and Autumn Moore went 4-of-6 to help the Lady Pirates finish 20-of-26.
